After a great deal of research for the past couple of years, on which oil to use in the 1800 Goldwing, I have come to a conclusion. It is my opinion after using Honda HP4 that there is a better oil at a much better price. I have started using Rotella T 5w40 synthetic. This can be purchased at Wal-Mart for around $16.00 per gallon, its in the blue container. It meets all the requirements for the GW is full syn but has none of the friction modifiers (energy conserving) that is bad for the clutch on the 1800. Accodrding to all the tests I have seen it seems to work better than HP4, and the guys on the chat lines say it makes for quieter shifting. So I deciced to try it myself. I use the super tech st6607 filter from Wal-mart and the Rotella T making an oil change $20.00 bucks versus $45.00 with Honda oil and filter. I have been amazed at how much quieter the shifting is, no more clunking on the downshift coming up to a light. Also the 1800 whine is more reserved. So all in all I think I have found the right oil and filter for me. You have to make the decision on what to use and what price to pay.

Oil Filters
According to MCN motorcycle consumer news, who tested many oil filters, the best filter for the 1800 was the: Wal Mart Super Tech ST 6607 or the ST 7317 the 7317 is longer like the filter on a 1500 and will work on the 1500. If you were not aware a 1500 filter will work on your 1800. These tested better than even the Honda filters, and at a cost of $2.07 you get a better filter for far less money. Sorry Honda. New note: price is up to $2.67 now, still a bargain. One other note, it does not void your warranty to use an aftermarket filter. The Manguson Moss Act of the United States Congress says that if it voids your warranty then the company must provide the filter for free. Most all filters meet or exceed the original specs. However trust me on this, some of us will never believe this.
